What led you to create a stationary/illustration business?

I had been freelance illustrating alongside my full-time job for a few years and in that time I designed my sisters save the date card. After that I started getting more requests and I eventually decided to launch Clementine Studio and go out on my own!

What do you enjoy most about it?

The autonomy of creating my schedule was what I was most looking forward to about working for myself, and while that's still great and I probably take it for granted, what I enjoy most now is having a few years of solid work and happy clients behind me which encourages me to keep going and gives me the confidence I need anytime doubts or fear creep in.

Tell us about an interesting wedding experience that stands out!

It's really surreal creating wedding items for a friend and then being at that wedding and seeing all of your work come to life, people touching and admiring it. I recently created the wedding suite for my friends' wedding last month and it was so fun seeing how they used the custom monogram I made them in so many little details- like on a tiny limoncello favor for guests, or as stickers on cigars for the groomsmen. It was so fun to see!

What do you desire for your business?

I want to keep growing organically and expand my brand with collaborations and other design work in the coming years.

Outside of your stationary work, what things do you enjoy doing? Any special hobbies?

I moved to Chicago a year ago from NYC (where I'm from) so I've loved exploring and getting to know the city. Discovering cute coffee shops and the best Chicago beaches with my pup have been favorite activities this Summer. Also, reading. I love books and I make sure to build in more time to read during the Summer.

Most-wished vacation destination and what do you plan to do there?

This is so tough! I have a huge travel bucketlist. Africa has always been #1 since I first studied it in 3rd grade. But more recently I've been dreaming of a trip to Morocco. The culture, colors, textures and patterns I see from there are calling my name!

What are you grateful for?

I'm trying to focus more on gratitude so I appreciate this question. Overall I'm very grateful for the health and happiness of my family and friends, daily life with my fiancè and puppy, getting to work everyday at a business I created, but more specifically right now I am grateful for Summer and iced coffee :)

Any recent cause for celebration?

I'm getting married in April! It's been weird to be on the other side of wedding planning after having worked with so many brides. It will be an interesting experience creating my own wedding invitations!

Vendors We Love- Betsy Elisa Beauty

Elisa Tallerico and Betsy Reyes, by caryn leigh photography

We absolutely love working with Betsy and Elisa! They're a super fun team and such a pleasure! Check out our small interview with them below, and if you're looking for a Hair and Makeup team....look no further!

What led you to become a Hair and Makeup team?

We met in 2000 at MTV, I (Betsy) did hairstyling for the network at the time, and Elisa did makeup.  Our partnership was almost instant and natural. We admired each other's work and saw that our styles complimented one another. It was all effortless.

What do you enjoy most about it?

The fact that we're not only a beauty duo and business partners, but that we are best friends. We have so much respect for each other and it flows into how our business has been so successful and why we’re so great at what we do. There's nothing better then waking up to do a job you absolutely adore with a biz partner that is someone you can trust, and have fun with!

Tell us about an interesting wedding experience that stands out?

Every wedding is so special to us. We truly feel a connection with each bride we’ve worked with, whether it is a long time friend or a new client. It’s always a magical day, whether rain or shine. There’s nothing like that last look right before the bride sees her groom, you can’t help get choked up with all the emotions.

One of our favorite weddings was for a friend/client, Vanessa Lachey. Elisa and I were there when she married Nick Lachey, and it’s still such a beautiful memory of us putting her veil in, and watching someone we love at her happiest moment. Getting to be part of those moments are always such an amazing feeling.

What do you desire for your business?

We want to continue to make people feel beautiful and confident… It's not just the hairstyle and lipstick, it’s the girl power talks that go along with it. Whether it is a wedding, engagement or a party, it’s always fun to get ready, and to look and feel your best, with great company.

Outside of Hair and Makeup, what things do you enjoy doing? Any special hobbies?

I can only speak for myself, but I love traveling, seeing the world and scuba diving!

Most-wished vacation destination and what do you plan to do there?

I can’t even narrow this down to 1! But my "to do" in the near future is Hawaii and Cayman Islands.... hike and dive.... and sleep (haha)!

What are you grateful for?

I am so grateful for the opportunities that we’ve had to be where we are today. Elisa and I work so hard for a company that we adore. What we have is no accident, it comes from our heart and our drive.

Any recent cause for celebration?

Our beauty team is growing and we couldn’t be prouder of the talent and personalities we have in our crew. We celebrate and applaud Team BE!

Vendors We Love -A More Perfect Union

I had the pleasure of meeting the amazing Hope Mirlis from A More Perfect Union at #theloveunion wedding event at 501 Union. We recently decided to grab some coffee in the Heights, and while chatting I'm thinking... this lady is wonder woman! I can hardly wrap my mind around the crazy amount of things she manages to do and improve on daily. Wedding officiant, yoga teacher, counselor, multi language learner...is there anything she can't do?! Read more about Hope below!

What led you to become an officiant?

Right after getting my MFA, one of my classmates asked me to officiate her wedding. It was a pretty magical experience, so it started me on a 2-year path to completely change careers and move back to my native New York.

What do you enjoy most about it?

Every couple is very different. It forces me to release my ego and listen to their story. And then I have the amazing opportunity to join with them and their guests and celebrate their love and community and help them tell their story through the ceremony.

Tell us about an interesting wedding experience that stands out?

There have been tons of interesting experiences. But once I surprised one of my couples and sang during the ceremony. In the questionnaire I use to learn how a couple envisions their ceremony, I ask the question “What songs would go on the soundtrack to your relationship?” The groom responded, “All My Lovin’” by The Beatles, so I decided to use a quote from the song in their ceremony. A few days before, I thought it would be nice to sing it instead. They were totally taken aback and the groom in particular got very emotional.

We heard you teach yoga! Tell us a little more about that?

When I used to teach acting and dance, I added yoga to the warm-up I did at the top of every class. I’ve been doing yoga since 2006, but I wanted to make sure that I was teaching correctly. So, I decided to get certified in 2010. I officiated a friends wedding a year later and she asked me to lead a yoga class for her bridesmaids the morning of her wedding. That sparked me to add it to my practice. I now offer a yoga class specifically for weddings. Either for the couple or the wedding party leading up to - or on the big day.

Outside of being an officiant, what things do you enjoy doing? Any special hobbies?

I love exploring the city and trying new restaurants. I am a native New Yorker, but I left for 20 years. Now that I’m back, I need to rediscover my city. Going to museums, seeing some theatre, walking on the Hudson.

Most-wished vacation destination and what do you plan to do there?

Oh gosh, there are so many! Amsterdam, Greece, The Grand Canyon, most of Asia. I made travel more of a priority a few years ago, but my list is very long. This year I am going to Turkey with a good friend. We’re going to lots of the tourist sites, but we’re leaving plenty of time to really take in the local culture.

(I love the next 3 questions, as I ask them regularly and post a list of responses weekly on my blog!)

What do you desire for your business?

To find some great collaborators who want to share an office space - that I can also use to meet with couples and host workshops

What are you grateful for?

Sunshine and hot coffee

Any recent cause for celebration?

I finally did my laundry AND I put my clean clothes away! Sometimes, it’s the little things!
